Soper, James Thomas

Thomas Soper was born in London and lived in Edmonton. Fl 1836 - 1890 He was a painter of landscapes and rustic scenes. He was an outstanding favorite in the Victorian era for the clarity and simplicity of his style. His subjects covered almost all of England and Wales, with a preference for Devonshire and views along the Thames near London. He is typical of the landscape artists inaugurated by Thomas Creswick who followed in the path of the Constable with his accent on greenery.  Soper exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, the British Institution, Suffolk Street, the Dudley Gallery, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Academy 1836-1882, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Institute of Painters. The Museum of Reading holds a Soper painting in its permanent collection.
