I was thinking of all the people and their animals that have
spread across the globe mixing up animals from all continents and transferring
them around the globe willy-nilly, mostly in the19th century - the great century
for immigration. Indian Runner Ducks (the 3 ducks in the painting) are a
perfect metaphor for this movement between continents as they are a flightless
duck from Asia, that now thanks to sea journeys of times gone by have spread to
all continents except Antarctica. I also love their inherent sense of
humour. They are the wonderful clowns of
the bird world.
Artistically I am also referencing the wave print by Hokusai
that we all know and love. He is one of my favourite artists and I was thinking
how can I make a painting as a bit of homage to his brilliant work GT
