The birds are Java Sparrows. 

Sylvie has this balancing clown in her toy box.  They have always amused me even when I was a child I played with one made of metal.  Sylvie’s is a modern plastic version. The clown is quite tricky to balance particularly in the standing up straight position.  In the original he has 2 balls at the end of the beam that you must adjust carefully to make it balance. I wanted to use this as a metaphor for how man is becoming increasingly responsible for the environment natural forces as such have been sidelined by our endeavours. The man in the painting hangs on to balance the environment for the "Java sparrows" egg to survive. GT
