Robin L. Stewart, born 1941has exhibited paintings in solo and group shows around Australia and internationally. In 2015 he attended the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London, where he exhibited his work The Fabricator. Robin paints from his studio in Richmond, Melbourne and his art developed from the architecture of the built environment to the metropolitan scene.
The Russian and European artists of the early 20th century, with their interest in industry and labour, provide an inspiration: Rodchenko, Malevich as well as Mondrian. However Robin has embraced figurative art. He works from careful drawing and seeks to find new harmonies in his exploration of geometry.
Robin’s work shows city life pared down from the noise, the entertainment and the fashion – leaving us to our thoughts. His paintings are about rooms and streets and city life. The figures that inhabit these night time scenes are interpreted as abstract constructions; sharply lit and involved in a narrative where they emerge from shadows, or pause on the way to somewhere else.
He has exhibited in Australia and England. Collections include the Castlemaine Art Gallery.
